[COMPLETE] Birth Cert Question
« on: Monday 20 January 20 23:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

On a birth certificate from 1891, I have the son of my great great grandmother with no father. In place of the father’s name there is written NT or NJ? 46 and underneath the mother’s name NT or NJ? 47 is written. Does anybody know what these codes mean?

Many thanks

Michael

What country, please?

Also, could you scan a snip of it in?

It’s British. I’ve uploaded a photo of it. But I’ve omitted the surname.

there's the comments in the left hand margin  :)

ADD
46 refers to column with father's name
47 refers to column with mother's name

ADD 2
The registrar's initials are RT so it is likely that NT or NJ is a mis-read for RT.

It is two numbered corrections, made whilst the register entry was being completed.

You can see that the father's name has been crossed through (the first correction), and then the word "formerly" under the mother's name has been crossed through (the second correction).

That would suggest that the registrar was under the impression the birth was to a married couple, until at some point during the completion of the entry it became clear that wasn't the case.

Although this isn't an image of  the original register, corrections made are reproduced on copies submitted to GRO, and so appear on any certificates/PDFs they provide.

He appears to be living with his mother, grandparents and aunts/uncles on 1891 census.

Grandparents stated as parents in 1901 and 1911.

(Mary's Father is an Edward)

Thank you for this. It confirms my beliefs then. That Edward is my great grandmother’s half brother and not her uncle.
