Given the crest is in relief and apparently reversed the obvious thought that came to me was that it was meant to double for use as a seal.

good work, quite agree, that could explain the mirror image

This is the Wappen (crest) of the Familie (family) Redern.

They orig. came from upper Silesia and Austria.

so they dont apear to be in my lineage, where would i find more info about the redern family? that is so cool you found the crest.

Are they Austrian then? i know the man who made the sword did so for the prussian court. in 1831 or 1841
