William Best Linney
« on: Friday 24 January 20 22:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi I have found the above in later censuses with and without his wife Mary Ann nee Bushrod and their children. However I cannot locate him on the 1861 or 1871. I therefore cannot find his fathers name and am getting stuck there. He was born 25th July 1854 in Nottingham.
He married in 1873 . They had 13 children, 8 living in 1911.
There is a William Linney born Newark around the right time, but I found a newspaper article about the death of a William Linney aged 21 in 1874 in Newark., therefore I discounted him (ish) ,he is on early censuses.
Thanks

This is curious, who is William Best in relation to Ann Linney? It says he’s married, but she isn’t . Is he the father ? Thanks, it’s thrown up more questions.

Well, given that “Best” found its way into the children’s names, it looks likely he was their father.

Perhaps he had a lawful wife out there somewhere and was not free to marry Ann Linney but cohabitated nevertheless.

That’s what I thought. There is a marriage of a William Best to an Elizabeth Burrows, that fits quite well. I am curious as to why he went to prison. It’s my husbands 6 x Great Grandfather.

There are insolvency proceedings against a William Best in Nottingham in 1850, so that may have led to his imprisonment.

I also saw an earlier acquittal (1841) on a manslaughter charge against a William Best in Nottingham.

There’s a possible death for him, Dec qtr 1866 Radford aged 48.
