(Royal?) M.M.S. Corp - Aldershot in 1901
« on: Monday 27 January 20 17:57 GMT (UK) »

I have a great grandfather who was based at Aldershot in 1901 working as a 'soldier' - he was 41 and a private in the Royal M.M.S. Corp...

Above him are soldiers in the Royal Army Medical Corp - but he, along with several others on the 1901 census are recorded as being in the M.M.S. Corp.

When Henry married in 1899 he was recorded as a Private (something unreadable) Medical Staff Corp.. I'm completely stumped (I've phoned Aldershot - they don't know!!)

Any ideas would be gratefully received!

Could it possibly be Marine Medical Service Corps?

RAMC history extract - In 1857 the Medical Staff Corps was reorganised into the Army Hospital Corps, although it reverted back to its former name in 1884 and by 1898 there were two distinct organisations within the Army Medical Services, the Medical Staff Corps and the Medical Staff (i.e. the officers). These two separate organisations were reorganised into one Corps, the Royal Army Medical Corps, by Royal Warrant on 23rd June 1898.

Almost certainly the Militia Medical Staff Corps, the part time Medical Staff Corps, there are a number of them in Aldershot.
From a history of the militia:

The militia reserve consisted of men selected from the ranks of the militia for special enlistment for service in the regular army when called upon in emergencies, in the following proportions to the establishments of the various corps: — Artillery, one-third ; engineers and infantry, one-fourth; medical staff corps, one-half. Special regulations are made as to age, physique, and character. The militia reserve was first formed in 1867, and in 1900 numbered 30,000 men. During an emergency in 1878, 20,000 militia reservists joined the regular army. The term "militia" reserve is therefore a complete misnomer, and the force so called is purely an army reserve.

Thank you for pointing that out Shaun - 'Marine' was a pure guess as you probably realised.

Hi  :)

Just seen your replies!!! Thank you...

His name was Henry Palmer, born 1860 in Shoreditch. He was married and in 1901 he was at Aldershot.

Can’t tell you how grateful I am, I’ve been struggling with this for so long. I contacted The Army Medical Corps museum and they suggested he was a masseuse (I said Henry was a HE 😂).

FindMyPast has a militia file for a Henry Palmer of the MMS who was a bit younger - but he may have lied about his age as he wasn't very tall.  Transferred from the Essex Regiment to the Militia Medical Staff in 1896.
