....but why no mmn on birth registration, there was with the later ones which definitely were fathered by someone else. As one was named Ernest, I would suspect Ernest Brewerton.

If she just named herself as Elizabeth ELTHAM when registering the children then no maiden name would be indexed.  If she named herself as Elizabeth ELTHAM formerly PAYNE with no father's name recorded then they would be indexed as ELTHAM with a mother's maiden name of PAYNE.  It just depends on how she chose to name herself at the time.

On one of the attestations (there seem to be two for the same man) on FindMyPast, in 1907 he says he is Single

In Soldiers Effects records there is an entry - 1909
Edward Eltham The Royal Welch Fusiliers No 9470

‘Insane’ is written in  the ‘date and place of death’ column
There is no entry in place/date of birth column nor in ‘next of kin’ and the
Money (10s 6d) was paid to himself.

I think he was discharged from Netley (military hospital)

Would that be him?

He transferred from Royal Berks to Welsh Fusiliers, so it looks like him. I saw a reference to Netley in a search then couldn't find it again.

I wonder if if he and Elizabeth had split up by 1907 - so when he went off to join the army he considered himself single. They would have had two children by this time but Eva had died.

It looks like 3 Royal Berks was militia and after two months he transferred to regular army.

Found Ernest Brewerton's WW1 service record. Page is torn but can see ..... George  with Eltham written underneath,  dob 27 Oct 1916, Wantage. It looks like he claim Alfred George, no mention of the two girls and Ernest 1912, maybe someone else's children.
