Simon Hickey, Saratoga, NY
« on: Tuesday 28 January 20 20:55 GMT (UK) »
Hello!

My family has been trying to find out more about Simon Hickey. He was born in Ireland around 1840 and married Anne Dwyer. By 1879 he was living in America and is said to have been a Silky Driver at the Saratoga Race Track.

He had a daughter named Mary "Beeba" Hickey who was born 17 June 1879 in New York and died in the 1970s, I believe. I know she had a sister named Bessie who was born in NY on 12 Feb 1883.

I found him in the 1900 Census which has him living at 51 Jefferson St. in Yonkers, which lines up with the information I have on his daughter. If you have access to Ancestry, here is the link to that Census: https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/7602/4114940_00902/68034238?backurl=https://www.ancestry.com/family-tree/person/tree/47516869/person/6786609323/facts/citation/112636543642/edit/record

This census says he was a Rail Road Gateman. It makes me wonder if he was a silky (sulky?) driver at Saratoga Park in NYC and there is just some confusion?

Mary Hickey married Henry Thomas Carroll (b. 1873 d. 1943) and they had three children: Marion (1901-1982), Dorothy (1903-1985), and Harry Thomas (1910-2002).

Any information would be greatly appreciated!

here is that 1900 census on familysearch
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MSPH-TYZ

and this looks like their arrival, 1883, headed to Brooklyn
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MSPH-TYZ

I don't know why it says the children are headed to Rhode Island (RI) and New York. maybe they had relatives there and were planning to split up for a while? or maybe the person writing it down made a mistake.

The city directories can help you fill in the years between censuses. Here are a few of the Yonkers directories.  They might have been in Brooklyn (or anywhere) before 1888.

If it was my family I also would be interested in knowing who the other Hickey families are in Yonkers, like Mrs Sarah (widow).

Yonkers City Directory

1886
Mrs Sarah Hickey, widow 204 1/2 Linden
  others, but no Simon

1888
Simon, Simon Jr, Joseph, Patrick, Rosanna, Thomas, all at 17 Vineyard

1892
  Simon Hickey, laborer, 29 Madison
Miss Rose Hickey, trimmer, 29 Madison
  Patrick Hickey, spinner, 29 Madison
Miss J Hickey, trimmer, 29 Madison
Mrs Sarah Hickey, widow, 109 Madison

1902
  Simon Hickey, laborer, 51 Jefferson
1904
some of the children, I think, but no Simon.

In some cities, the city directory would tell you when a person died during the previous year. You could try a few years forward and see if Simon turns up.

since you have ancestry.com, here is a link to the main City Directory page, you select the state, city, and year in the right hand column

a few more city directory listings from Yonkers

1905
Simon Hickey, farmer, home 3 Jefferson
Simon Hickey Jr, fireman, home 258 New Main
  Patrick, 14 Centre

but
1906
  no Simon Hickey, farmer
  Simon Hickey, fireman, 14 Centre
  Patrick 14 Centre

?is this your Annie - 1906
Annie McCormick, widow of Benjamin, grocer at 57 Jackson, house at the same address

----
So did Simon Sr die between the 1905 and 1906 issues of the City Directory? Or could he have gone to live with one of his daughters? Your tree has Mary in Windsor, CT by 1901 and Bessie in Vernon, NY by 1910.

Thank you all so much!

I started to research the city directories just a couple of days ago! I have a list going and now I plan to look them all up in the census! I think Simon may have died after the 1900 census. I can't find him in 1910 and his daughters are married by that time. It's possible he had other children tho! I'm wondering if he came to the U.S. and lived in Yonkers or lived in Saratoga beforehand as family lore suggests.

Thank you all so much! I really appreciate you taking the time to help a stranger on her quest!  :)

Both links you posted are for the 1900 census. I'm curious about the record that shows they are going to Rhode Island! I look on the site and wasn't able to find arrival records. Would you be so kind as to repost the link! My grandfather was born in Rhode Island so now I'm really curious! Haha

Thank you so much for your help!! I really appreciate it!

Sorry about that.

Here is a link to familysearch's index page for their arrival:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:27TJ-RSL

It shows their transcription of the year and ship, and other information. If you click on the image on that page it takes you to the image that Sandra posted. Since it is your family, click back through the images of the manifest to the first page of the ship they were on, and be sure the ship's name and arrival date (as familysearch reads it) is correct. Plus it will probably give you the exact day, and maybe what port they left from.
