Hello!
I have been searching for information on my grandfather's brother who died of polio on 19 May 1961. He was born in Sept 1930 and was named Roger John O'Gara. His parents were Roger James O'Gara and Mary Veronica O'Neill O'Gara. They all lived in Central Islip and worked at the Central Islip Hospital as well. My mother says that there use to be a newspaper called "Talk of the Town" that was printed on Carelton Ave., which so happened to be the street the hospital was on.
I have used websites like fultonhistory.com before to look at newspapers, but I have not been able to find this particular newspaper. I was wondering if anyone has heard of it? Perhaps it was just a section or column of another newspaper? I have been trying to find Roger Jr.'s obituary for years.
I am told that he went upstate (in Lake Placid maybe) for treatment, but died at age 30. This devastated the family and I thought they would have placed an obit since he was a star basketball player at CI back in the day.
I guess my question is: how do you go about finding names of now defunct newspapers? Should I contact the local archives person of that town? Or is there a way to see a list online?
Thank you all for any assistance. I really appreciate it!
