A rather sad little entry in Non-Com Records
« on: Thursday 30 January 20 19:26 GMT (UK) »
I found this rather sad little piece in the Non-Conformist Register for the area of Wales in which I live.  Presumably it was written by whoever had had charge of the records; I really feel for the poor man.  I can't read it all so any help with filling in the gaps would be appreciated.  So far I've got:

I .........
being sickly indolent and forgetfull am ........
sorry yt I have neglected to ........
Register ye names of those yt were .....
added to ye Church and were Buried
yn their proper order -
and I desire my
successor to follow ye example of my (good?)
predecessor therein.

Aw thanks Wiggy, for your help.  Just been discussing with the daughter about him, and worrying about him going to bed, blowing out his candle, and worrying about the fact that he hadn't done his job very well.  I do so much admire his courage in admitting his failure - takes a lot to do that.

Could his first name be a contraction of 'William'?
It starts with a 'W' - I don't think it's an 'M' or 'N', as they are slightly differently written in 'Midsummer' and 'New Style' at the start of the first line.
The surname would seem to start again with a 'W', and again would seem to have a contraction mark over it. 'Williams'? -  though there's something else after the "W' I think.

You have 'yn' further down at the start of 'Yn their proper order', but I think it's just a capital 'I', so just reads 'In' - compare it to the 'I' in the first line.

I wonder how many other registers suffered from the same fate?  :(

Thanks so much, Goldie - I've always had very high regard for your ability to decipher these texts, so most grateful for your help.  I did wonder whether he did mention 'Midsummer'.  At least he had the courage to admit to his failings, which I suspect is unusual.

Ah Roger, William Williams Panycelyn.  My late mother was one of his groupies:  with a bunch of friends they used to seek out and visit the places he preached.  You've brought back a lot of happy memories with your post - thanks, happy times! x

He would have done very well to reach 1791 if he was sickly and indolent in 1753!

Indeed Roger - if only I could read his name, I could find out when he shuffled off his mortal coil.
