Where is Toun? Daniel Gillies
« on: Thursday 30 January 20 20:50 GMT (UK) »
Hi Everyone -

The Baptism record for my 3x Great Grandmother Isabella Gilles reads -

'Isabella - Lawful Daughter of Danl Gillies Labourer in Toun and Isabella ms McEachran was born 18th May & Baptd 1st Jun 1823'.

I can't find a marriage record for Daniel & Isabella to corroborate that their children were lawful, and on other baptismal records it does not state the place where Daniel was from.

Thanks - Keelan

Isabella and 3 sisters' births & christening entries all show on the index as taking place in Campbeltown.

Could 'toun' be either the way Campbeltown was written, or a reference to the 'town' part of the place name?

Daniel Gillies 50 labourer b. Ireland
Effy Gilles 45 b. Ireland
Bell Gilles 15 b. Argyllshire
Jean Gilles 10 b. Argyllshire

Indeed, all took place in Campbeltown. I know Campbeltown is referred to as the wee toon, but didn't know if that would be put onto a baptismal record.

Thanks for this Ev, have seen it before aye. But I don't think Effy was the same woman as Isabella (also written down as Isobell). There is a Euphemia Gillies nee Walker who dies 08/04/1879 in Campbeltown Poorhouse, the widow of Daniel Gillies (Labourer), aged 84. Unsure when Daniel & Effy would have got married, but it would also mean that Isabella/Isobell died between 1831 and 1841 though I can't find a record of it. There are a few Isabella (Varying spellings) McEachran born in Campbeltown.

Have you looked at the other daughters' OPR entries? Can you put a clip of the entry for Isabella on here so that people can have a look?

Willing to bet that this is a sloppy recording of 'in the town of Campbeltown'.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
