Comparing letter-forms shown in the extract, I would go for Bish.

Hi,

It definitely looks like Bi-- so Birk would make sense. However, the "r" is not like all the others in the snippet. It is more like an "s" (on the end of "pounds", for example).

"Bisk" would be a weird one, though!  ::) As would "Bish", my first impression...

Best regards,
Karen

Edit: Simultaneous post with Bookbox!  ;D
Maybe Bish wasn't so daft after all.  ;)

Without seeing the responses I decided it could be Bish.

My thinking was that the last letter is nothing like the k in like in line 1.

There are plenty of Bish in Sussex (according to FamilySearch).

I agree that it’s Bish.

"Bisk" would be a weird one, though!  ::) As would "Bish", my first impression

It’s not really weird. There are quite a few hits for this surname if you take a look at freeBMD.

Thank you all, yes I went with Bish and variants.  Its an odd surname they do appear in later records in Sussex but  I'm getting back to 1670 ish now and records are few and far between if they exist at all.

Found one possible but just managed to bump off all her children  ??? poor lady all 5 died in infancy.

I'm using the Sussex Family History database rather than familysearch but I will take a look, thank you.
