In London 13th September 1818 Neal (gent. of College Street) and Sarah McPherson have baptised James Malcolm, 1810, Maria Louisa, 1812, Frederick Adolphus, 1814, and Charles Archibald, 1816.

(Original on Ancestry from London C of E births and baptisms.)
Is Neal an alternative, ever, for Alexander?
As 4 children being baptised at same time, possible implication that they were born abroad....

You could try searching the London Gazette for Alexander MacPherson, as details should be in there if he was a Major.  Possibly do a general search, not specify London nor Edinburgh editions.

e.g.
In 1803
Inverness and Fort George Battalion
Cantray Company.
Alexander MacPherson, Gent, to be Lieutenant.

Alexander Major McPherson also has 2 daughters Helen and Sarah who marry at St. Cuthberts Edinburgh.
I cannot find birth records for these Girls, and if he was in the army they may have been born abroad.

I found Alexander Major in the 1841 census in the Greenwich Hospital.

Have run out of time at the moment - will look more later.

ADDED - I am not sure he was a major now, as in army rank. His name appears as Alexander Major McPherson.

Hi again

There is a Sarah McPherson   aged 55     Independent  born England on the 1841 Census in Ayr at Wellington Square. She's with an Emily McPherson (most likely her daughter ) aged 15 also born in England and 3 servants.

Looby :)

Added - the Courthouse and prison was in Wellington Square. The court still sits in the court building there.

Yes, I also wondered if he was using Major as a middle name, not as a rank.

However, London Gazette February 1798, Alexander MacPherson promoted to Major

HIS MAJESTY has been pleased to. appoint the under mentioned Officers of the East India Companies Forces to take Rank, by Brevet, in His Majesty's Army in the East Indies only, as follows.
Commisions dated the first Day of January, 1798. ....
