Meinen family, Bern Switzerland
« on: Friday 31 January 20 21:31 GMT (UK) »
I have a Jules/Julius Christian Meinen who says he was born in Bern about 1846.

On his marriage in 1872 he lists his father as Jules Christian Meinen too. (This has been transcribed as Meiner)

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Best wishes

Hello,
Bern is both a place (the city of Bern) and a canton (federal state) so could cover a wide range of locations. However a useful online source https://hls-dhs-dss.ch/famn/index.php says that Meinen comes from Spiez before the 19th century.
The parish registers (Kirchenbucher) for Spiez (which is in canton Bern) are in the Bern archives http://www.query.sta.be.ch/archivplansuche.aspx?ID=37
I thought scans were viewable, but I’m not getting that facility this morning - maybe one of the other Swiss experts can have a go and advise.
Otherwise, send them an email (they will cope with English) and ask for a look-up. I’ve always found them helpful with simple enquiries. Go to the info corner tab for the contacts.

Hi
It's very tempting to go with the following
Christian Meinen born 27 August 1845 bapt 21 Sept
at Zweisimmen Bern
s of Christian Meinen and Maria Oswald

Another older son Christian born  12 Sep 1844 to the couple,bapt 13 Oct 1844 who must have died
ps try Familysearch first.

Thank you for the information and for taking the time to look.
I will keep it in mind although it's not quite the same, it could be him?

I am now able to advise how to access the parish books at Bern archives. Double click/tap the final catalogue entry to open where there is the pdf of each book.

Taufrodel = Baptisms
Eherodel = Marriages
Totenrodel = Deaths

At the end of the book is an index of sorts.
HOWEVER it’s all in German script so you will need to look on familysearch for their guide to reading it.

Zweisimmen is also available, and it’s not too far from Spiez, so a possibility.

I would highly recommend a visit to see the area...the Bernese Oberland is beautiful!
