1901 census look up
« on: Saturday 01 February 20 10:35 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I have a couple George Willis Keatley and his wife Emily Hodgkiss .
George is born 1870 Sutton Coldfield and Emily 1872 .
They marry at Weeford in 1891 and are on the 1891 census at Swinford.
I can find George on the 1911 at Hammerwich with his oldest and youngest sons  but he is married and no sign of Emily or the others.
Children
James 1891
George 1893
Ellen Annie 1896
Arthur Frederick 1899
Rose 1901

Two of the children George and Ellen Annie depart for Canada in 1905 as British Home children.
Rose is with an 'aunt' Emily Ramsbottom and her husband in 1911 in Manchester.
I very much suspect the 'aunt' is her mother.

What happened and where are they on the 1901 census?

Where were the children born to search by birthplace, say Ellen Annie?

Have you looked for Emily "marrying" a Ramsbottom, do her details tally with your Emily?

Was Rose born before the 1901 census or after?  That might help find the 1901.

Links are to Emily Evans marrying George Ramsbottom in 1904 but don't know if this is correct  :-\

The fact that 2 children were British Home Children, departing for Canada in 1905 would suggest that they were in a Children's Home, or the workhouse?

Might only be shown by initials in 1901?

Hello
Yes the 1905 passenger list give the children from Birmingham Middlemore Children's Home.

The children are all born in the Lichfield registration district.
Eldest James baptised at Weeford ,Ellen Annie at Longdon St James,Arthur Fred census says born Shenstone but can't find a baptism.Rose is Staffs Lichfield on the 1911.
Rose was born 10 March 1901 so just before.

The marriage for George and Emily Ramsbottom is interesting.I'm struggling to see how they are Aunt and Uncle.
Emily's place of birth is Wolverhampton and her parents Thomas and Mary.

Thanks for all the help

Are Emily's parents alive in 1901?  Wonder if some of the children were with her.

As for Rose she had just been born so would hope she was with her mother  :(

Have you got exact place of birth for Rose in case workhouse or similar.

There is a Home Children record for Arthur Frederick Keatley here :

http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/immigration/immigration-records/home-children-1869-1930/immigration-records/Pages/item.aspx?IdNumber=171445

It states " Arthur Frederick Keatley
              aged 8
guardian George Willis Keatley of 2  Burton Yard Wade
              date of application : 1906-10-17
Notes : Mother living in Manchester with another man"

This seems to confirm your suspicions about Emily Ramsbottom.
