Hi,

If you could confirm that your ancestor Elizabeth Lichfield Bpt 1800 to William & Elizabeth married
Joseph Smith in Duffield 1817.  Then it is certain that we are talking about William Lichfield who’s first wife Hannah Agard died, he then produces with Elizabeth ? Three children
John 1795
James 1798
Elizabeth 1800

William dies 1820 and in his will is leaving property to children of his first wife Hannah  and the children of his second wife Elizabeth who is still alive in 1820.

There will have been a marriage to Elizabeth?, if not he would have mentioned the fact they were illegitimate in the Will.

So did your Elizabeth marry as above?

Thank you Spendlove.

Yes I can confirm that my link is with Elizabeth born c 1800 and married Joseph Smith in 1817. Thank you for the information about William's will which I have just downloaded and am studying it.

It certainly seem possible that the marriage to Elizabeth Hancock in Bromley, Kent is the one that I am looking for, but, as Elizabeth was a widow, it still leaves me with a dead end.

I may contact Kent archives next week to see if they can help in any way.

Thank you again.  Your help is very much appreciated

That’s ok, I live local and this was driving me just as mad as you.

When he dies William is living the Bent, which is Heage/Belper border. See:-

Just have to find the marriage now.

Checked Land Tax Redemption 1798 on Ancestry with little success, so perhaps William purchased most of his property after 1798.

Hi,

Just an idea but noticed that one of the witnesses to WL = Elizabeth Hancock  Kent marriage was a John Melborn.

https://www.freereg.org.uk/search_records/5817e703e93790eb7fc58a8f/elizabeth-hancock-william-litchfield-marriage-kent-bromley-1794-04-16?locale=en

So was Elizabeth Hancock originally a Melbourne? both Litchfield’s and Melbourne’s were Naylors.

Elizabeth Melbourne = John Hancock 8.4.1786 at Duffield

Looking for Hancock deaths at present.

Thanks again Spendlove

I seem to have got busy with Litchfield wills recently so have not had time to look for Elizabeth and William Litchfield.  William's Parents were Thomas and Martha Ridge whose first husband was Abraham Harrison, and after looking at his will, I wonder if that is where William acquired his property.  I have not been able to find any children from Abraham and Martha's mariage.  At the moment I feel inundated with Litchfield information so am struggling to become confused!

As you live in the area, you may be interested in the fact that Elizabeth (nee Litchfield) and Joseph Smith's daughter, Ann, married Isaac Shore who, with his brother Thomas, acquired the mill at Heage which I had the pleasure of visiting recently.

Thanks again

Hi

Money in 1759 when Abraham Harrison died intestate think you will find Litchfields were as wealthy as the Harrison’s.   The next 2 Abraham Harrison’s built their nail trade and became very wealthy, only for the lot to get blown by Thomas Litchfield Harrison in some very dodgy dealings with Ince the solicitors.

Litchfield appear many times in Manor Court Records relating to property.

Have you seen the Halton Map c 1698, shows Litchfield house Heage.?

There is a will for a John Hancock, blacksmith, died Derby 1790 no children named but wife is an Elizabeth.!!!

Small world Heage windmill built by my distant ancestor Joseph Spendlove.

I am so very much enjoying your information about the Litchfield family and I realise that I have so much more to learn and discover about them. I have only just started to research that part of my family and feel that I am drowning in all the information!

No I haven't seen the Halton map c 1698 and would love to know how I can access it.

The marriage of John Hancock to Elizabeth Melborn definitely seems a possibility confirmed by the burial of John Hancock in 1790 doesn't it?  Would not have discovered all this information without your help.  Will check the marriage records tomorrow to see if John's occupation is given.  Was it normal for Blacksmiths to travel around the country?

Thanks again
