I assume he would have been confused and conflated it with other memories.

Thank you again for all your help Max.

I assume he would have been confused and conflated it with other memories.

That is understandable.  :)

Have you shown the service record to your grandfather and other family yet MJ? I imagine there will be a lot of interest in it.

Hi Ruskie,

Not yet. I am visiting him again over the weekend, so will take it all with me then.

Ruskie - for further reading look at Wiki on 61st Infantry Division at the para "Light Division and disbandment".  He was in 5 Somerset Light Infantry from 4 July 1945 (in that division) which coincides exactly with the re-organisation into a light division and the preparations to go to Japan.  Shortly after the disbandment he was posted to Austria.

Shall do, thanks Max.  :)

MJ - I know a lot of people on rootschat have sent off for WW2 service records, but I don’t remember reading about anyone who has sent for their own, so this is exciting.  ;D

Ruskie, if it wasn’t for you and Max I wouldn’t have known you could order someone’s records for them if they were still alive. To be honest, the form for living veterans is actually so much easier to fill out than that of an ancestor.

Hi All,

A little update to say thank you for all your help on this and to say that my grandad has now had a look at his records himself. It brought back a lot of memories which I managed to film on my phone so that I can remember him telling them. He went through his drill with his wooden rifle I bought him, and he came out with some great (although horrific) stories. One of which was him getting wounded by a direct hit from a tank which was on 1 May 1945 on his records. Another was liberating camps and giving some of his chocolate to some of the prisoners. He then started to potter around the house looking for a photo he remembered he had with him in his uniform. We didn’t find it, but when we do I will be sure to post it.

He never did apply for his 3 medals he was awarded, so I have applied for them now on his behalf. If he does get them I shall let you all know.

Cheers,

MJ

That is wonderful MJ.  :) Many thanks for the update.

Yes, please do post the picture of him in uniform when you find it.

I am so glad you applied for his medals too - do you know why he didn't apply for them all those years ago?
