i have now got my granddads  birth certificate and  only mothers name on it were do i go from here please lisa

This indicates an illegitimate birth, but in order to help further we need some names, dates and places please.

Let us know the details on the birth certificate and we might be able to help.

I would suggest that you look through the Court Records to see if any claim for maintenance was made against the person most likely to be the Father.

My Great Grandmother was illegitimate and I have never found out who her Father was, only possibility now is via a DNA match.

my granddads name was James disley born 8th august 1897 burnley lancashire mother alice disley  lived at 38 Travis st burnley lancashire at james birth  thank you lisa

Have you found him on the 1901 or 1911 census?

This might be 1901, age is off, though.

think they are my family as Alice went on to marries Edward waddington in 1906 but died in 1907
