What happened to Jane Tucker?
« on: Tuesday 04 February 20 13:15 GMT (UK) »
Jane Tucker was baptised in Wanborough, Wilts on 8 April 1832 d/o John Tucker and Eliza (nee Kent).
After her birth there followed
Mary 1833
Hannah 1835 - 1844
Sarah 1838
William 1840 - 1844
George, 1841 - 1844
Eliza, 1843 - 1844
William, 1845
Harriet 1847

In 1849 the family emigrated to Australia. On the arrival record, the only children listed are Mary, Sarah, William and Harriet. So what happened to Jane? Did she die before civil registration and her burial record is not on line?. Or did she leave with the rest of the family but died on the voyage.
Or did she stay behind, she would have been about 17.

In 1841 I can find John Tucker and Eliza in Wanborough, but the only child with them is the first William. So where are Mary, Hannah and Sarah?
They are not with Eliza's parents or John's widowed mother.

Can anyone find them please?

You're right I did have the wrong family. I was so convinced they would be in Wanborough where the Kents were that I didn't notice the John and Eliza I found were a bit young.  Thank you very much.

So Jane didn't die before 1837, so two possibilities, she stayed behind in England or started the trip and died at sea.

If she started the trip then she would be on the same passenger list with the others.  If such a list is available of course.

She was old enough to have been out on her own or betrothed perhaps, have you looked for a marriage for her pre emigration time.

1851 there's a Jane Tucker age 20 born Wanborough lodger in Stratton St Margaret with a William Tucker 1.

Probably his birth in Mar 1850 Highworth no mothers maiden name

Baptism 7 Apr 1850.

Getting ahead of myself but looks like son William ends up in London if you need more on him later.

Ah there is a death for Jane Tucker Jun 1851 Highworth age 21

I would suggest she was the 20 year old in 1851 with son William 1 but whether she was "your" missing Jane?  What do you think.

I checked the emigration records I found. There are two types. One lists John Tucker and just gives ages of those travelling with him (Wife and 3 children ages 10, 3 and 1). On the line underneath is Mary servant age 15. This maybe because at 15 she is considered independent. The other lists all 6 people by name and age. I thought the latter was a list of arrivals, but I think it is a passenger list so it list those who started the voyage.

The one in Stratton St Margaret looks a strong possibility. And with an illegitimate son.

Thank you for your help.

The only other Jane Tucker of right age I can find in Wiltshire in 1841 is in Pewsey district not Highworth so it is a possibility. FindMyPast has burial record for the 1851 death and it is in Stratton St Margaret. I think I will look in to son William.
I have DNA matches to a group of people some are siblings or first cousins to each other and they all share a match with me and a known descendent of Eliza Kent's sister Rebecca. I don't think they descend from the group which went to Australia as the set of siblings in the group are in USA.

Hi Lizzie,
I'm a descendant of John & Eliza Tucker in Australia via #4 child Sarah, who married Richard Tiller.
In our records Jane didn't come to Australia & died from typhoid in 1851 aged 19.
I have copies of her birth, baptism, death & burial certificates.
John Tucker is hurried at my local cemetery at Warnertown in South Australia.
He has so many descendants his grave is visited often by people across Australia and overseas.
I would be interested to know more about William, if there was a William in Jane's life.
Regards,
Kendall
