Mary shone plemonstall
« on: Tuesday 04 February 20 17:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi there
I am getting a bit lost over Mary shone 1693 married John Stockton. Mary has siblings born in the same place, but there are a couple of possibilities for her father, John shone. I am struggling to put the Hawarden John way over in Cheshire. Has anyone been researching this, the biggest problem is that John shone is a common name. Any help is appreciated

Hi Julie,
I have Hawarden Jenkins ancestors dating back to 1670's at least, with some moving to Plemonstall/Guilden Sutton area up to 100 years later. So that 15 mile move is totally possible for your Shone family.
I see your difficulty as there are about a dozen Hawarden born John Shone 1625-1665, and Plemonstall has a number of Shone baptisms to father Thomas, around the time Mary would be born.
I guess as one family member moved, other followed.

I can only find one Plemonstall John Shone burial, 1723 'Yeoman of Hoole'

Sorry I cannot be more helpful, but I do have all the Hawarden Parish transcripts dating back to the 1500's if you would like any 'look ups'

Regards,
Philip

Thanks for that. I just couldn't see John shone being born and buried in Hawarden but having a family in plemonstall?
I would think that Mary's dad would be from plemonstall and possibly his dad from elsewhere.
Thanks for the offer

There are 3 Baptism possibilities for Mary's Dad, John Shone:
Plemonstall 8/4/1632, s/o John (appears to be the only one from Plem.)
Hawarden 5/3/1642, s/o William
Hawarden 23/1/1658, s/o John of Pentrobin
He may even have been Bp in Chester.

Do you know when/who he married?
Problem is that during the aftermath of the Civil War 1650-60, Parish records were not well kept - that's my brick wall!

Happy to help with any Hawarden records

Thanks, I saw those and thought that there should be a generation in between them as that's a good gap. There's a St Mary's on the hill and a Malpas marriage which seems to be a little closer than Hawarden. Curse those men who didn't name the mothers  ::)

I'm afraid I got confused !  Was 1698 Mary's baptism or marriage?

The only John Stockton/Mary Shone marriage I can find is Bunbury 20/10/1732
Plemonstall Bp Mary Shone, 18/5/1703, d/o John Shone of Hoole.
This is probably completely wrong!

There is quite a cohort of Shone in Malpas, about 18 miles from Plemstall, Hawarden being slightly closer.

If you let me know her baptism date I will look for father John's marriage c. 0-10 years prior, and his birth year c. 25 years before that.

Many thanks,
Philip

Looking at the original documents, the children were of 'John Shone of Hoole', so the 1723 Plem burial 'John Shone Yeoman of Hoole' looks pretty good.

I came across the following: - may not be relevant
Mary Shone married John Cansley, Plem 30/5/1726
Thomas Shone married Hannah Taylor, Christleton 7/4/1729
Joseph Shone married Sarah Maddock, Plem 12/2/1740
John Shone married Margaret Lanslett/Lansley, Plem 23/2/1730

No obvious c. 1700 marriages for father John Shone:
1700 Chester, Abigail Hewett (he had no Abigail daughters)
1693 Malpas, Mary Tayler (seems a bit early)
1698 Hanmer Flints, Catherine Groom (no daughter Catherine)

Possible baptisms c 1670:
1665 Malpas s/o Richard;  1669 Cheshire, s/o Robert. He had no sons with either name.

St Oswalds Chester has:
5/10/1674 s/o John
9/1/1675 s/o John, husbandman

Sorry nothing more helpful has appeared. A wild guess, he married a Mary and was the son of Thomas or John !!
