Found 1939 register showing David Shaw (b1872) and Mary (b1876) living together at 9 Thirlwell Terrace. This ties in with details you kindly sent.

I did try GRO with the same info without success. I did report it so maybe they are on the ball. I will now request a copy.

Just seen the birth certificate for David Downs (no "e" in name) Little.
Born - 1st July 1903.
Mother's maiden name - Mary Little (a domestic servant).
Father - Not named.
Address - 18 Back Devonshire Street, Sunderland U D.
Informant - Mary Little (mother).
Look forward to your help.

Do you think that that 1932 marriage is your Mary and David, rather belatedly.

If so, buy it for her Father's name - or have you definitely identified her already?

Not convinced with the 1932 marriage to Mr Shaw but not too concerned about this as we are looking to go back in time.
Happy DDL's mother was definitely called Mary Little.
She possibly married David Downes c1895 and had 2 children (1901 census) before David's birth in 1903. These children were called Ethel (1894) and Henry (1896) Downes but I can find no birth records on FindMyPast to validate the mothers maiden name so I could be wrong (I usually am).

Maiden names were not shown on GRO indexes until September qtr 1911. Have you looked for births under Little/Downs/Downes

She possibly married David Downes c1895 and had 2 children (1901 census) before David's birth in 1903.

If she married David Downes - why was David given the surname Little and why is no father named on his birth cert?

Mary married to David Downs was Mary Howard. She later remarried to Mr Robson, who may have been the chap boarding with them in 1901.
I just wondered if David Downs might have fathered your David (whilst married to Mary Howard).
Wild speculation, I'm doing too much of that lately.

Mary Little had 2 children before taking up with Mr Shaw - one died in that dray accident, so more than just one 'mistake'.
