If he deserted c 1880 then that would fit but the enlistment was in the Hamilton name was it?

If he was born before 1856, Ballyragget records don’t begin until then

Yes, the enlistment was as Hamilton Sept 1883, but I don't see Hamilton to account for the nearly 3 years in the Berkshire regt.

The birth 1859 does seem very consistent across all records found so far.

They showed when searching ‘Ballyragget’ but that may be due to apostrophes and spacing - always difficulties with the use of those in a name  ::)

I've tried with just the service number, 424 people had that number!  Reduced to 3 when I said Patrick. None were him.

Need someone with a Fold3 sub to take a look  - Please  :)

Pammi63, you mentioned the Boer War - it seems that Patrick was in South Africa before that - I wonder if that link has been passed through the family.

He did go back to SA 12.02.98 to 10.09.02. South Africa medal with Cape Colony Clasp.

So that’s why we cannot find him in 1901.

"Katherine Mary Cahill dob 1856/7 was born wexford fern bantry"

Have you decided if she was born in Wexford or Bantry yet?

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

She seems to be Mary Bourke/Burke with a sister Agnes now.
We don’t know where the birthplace Wexford/Fern/Bantry is recorded other than a published tree  :-\
