Pammi63, you mentioned the Boer War - it seems that Patrick was in South Africa before that - I wonder if that link has been passed through the family.

He did go back to SA 12.02.98 to 10.09.02. South Africa medal with Cape Colony Clasp.

So that’s why we cannot find him in 1901.

We haven’t got Mary and the children in 1901, have we?

Hi I know in 1911 census he was a widower, (1910).William herbert son died 1909 and it shows address with housekeeper daughter eleanor mary obrien born devonport single and my grandad frederick Joseph obrien
I found info he was a writer in ordinance army dept
Its my great great uncle William obrien i have nothing apart birth records and mention in will as an heir to g.g.grandfather sorry if i cant always reply and not v clear

Hi Pammi,
I thought you would be a bit shocked by this information - I certainly was.

Did you know Patrick had changed his name and your grandfather was registered as Hamilton?

Also that Catherine Mary Cahill was Mary Burke?

All this throws doubt on you having a great uncle William O’Brien - at least not from Limerick so not the one you have in your records.

Your great grandfather’s army record apparently gives his birthplace as Ballyragget, Kilkenny.

Think you may have wrong family as i have traced gg granfather Patrick obrien and his wife Mary Anne galligan seen docs with births of my great grandfather and defo a brother William
I gave wrong info for Mary Anne galligan originally soz she wasnt born Wexford

Got it thanks. Blimey.... a bit shocked yes about newspaper cutting .,there is a rumour that in army wartime he was doing v hush hush secret work maybe some connection??
