Maybe he was afraid that some family descendant would try and research his family 2 or 3 generations later??   ;D

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Ordnance...he might have been doing something with maps. But I don’t think that has anything to do with the name change that lasted 21 years. From when he was 26 at least. It is far more likely to be as Heywood suggested a desertion and re-enlistment issue. You might never know though.

The big task at the moment I feel is to find Mary and the children in 1901, to see if Mary is more precise about her place of birth.

The only thing I can say is that they were not at No 2 Quested Road.

Also,

1. what happened to Agnes. If she got married somewhere you would hopefully have at least a Father’s name for her.  And so potentially for Mary.

2. Heywood supplied the link to the Ballyragget PR.  To look for a possible birth for JP

3. Having created George Vincent I wonder who The siblings Mary & Claude represent?  I wondered if he had a sister Mary O’Brien who married someone HAMILTON. (Possibly Claud)  After all he has supplied an actual address, he must have thought someone at that address would want to know his fate.

4. What was Mary Burke doing in South Africa??  And when did she go there?

Yes, they were at that address by 1905, and in the 1911.  But we need to find them in 1901.
Just Mary and the children.  (And Agnes).  George/Joseph in SA

Does anyone know if there are directories for Belgium for 1883?
To see who was living at the address on the attestation

Might be worth making a separate post on the Europe board  just asking for that Pammi63.
Put a link back to this post so that they can see why you  are asking.

Glad it is moving on a bit.
I looked for Belgian links and a possible Hamilton /O’Brien marriage in England/Ireland earlier in the day but nothing yet.

Pammi,
Whilst there is evidence for Patrick O’Brien with parents Patrick and Mary Ann Galligan, it is most doubtful that it is him.
I have looked in 1901, Irish census but couldn't see them there either.
As the two boys were born in Harwich, that seems a likely place for 1901 but so far no sight.
Baptisms might help with an address  :-\
