I think you need to “unlink” and start afresh.
I suspect the information re Joseph Patrick and St Michael’s parish etc you have stems from the military record of another Joseph Patrick. Details on FindMyPast. Clearly not the same man.

NB I noticed in the report of Herbert’s funeral that Eleanor went by Nellie, so need to remember that for 1901.  (Not that it has helped me!)

I am presuming they were still HAMILTON in 1901, but have searched under both names.

There are references in ‘U.K. Military Deserters’ to Patrick O’Brien b 1854/55 of Ballyragget with desertion date April 1879/1880.
These are only from an index and the records are at Fold3. His regimental number is 5993.

Maybe he enlisted in his own name, deserted and then re-enlisted under an assumed name?

I caved and signed up to a free trial of Fold 3. (just have to remember to cancel now) Patrick O'Brien 5993 is 5ft 4 inches tall with no distinguishing marks

George Vincent HAMILTON alias Joseph Patrick O'Brien is 5 ft 9 inches tall has a scar on his jaw and a small cross tattooed on his hand.

Thanks very much Mckha489. That’s very kind of you.

I keep searching but by now am not sure what there is to find. I just thought I found a possible Claude Hamilton born in India but there is a marriage for him. :-\

Yes, there is a suitable gap between marriage and Eleanor’s birth in Devonport.
