Marriage of John Smedley TURNER and Winifred SWINDELL, Basford 1903
« on: Friday 07 February 20 01:27 GMT (UK) »
I am hoping that some kind soul will be able to provide the full details for the marriage of John TURNER and Winifred SWINDELL in the Basford R.D. in Q4 1903. The groom may have used the middle name of Smedley for the nuptuals.

If John is who I think he is he was born in Sawley, DBY on 5 Feb. 1873 and baptised there on 3 Aug 1873. He was the son of John TURNER and Catherine nee SMEDLEY, she being a sister of my GGGrandmother Mary SMEDLEY.

Thank you

Darryl Smedlay

To lookup a marriage you have to know which church it took place in.  The 1903 entry does not give a middle name for him

Basford RD covered many areas

https://www.ukbmd.org.uk/reg/districts/basford.html

Have you looked for them in the 1911 census to establish birthyear and birthplace - here's the entry

https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XW9B-PVD

Also - daughters birth reg shows mmn as Swindell

Thank you Carole, yes I do have them in the 1911 Census. I was hoping that someone with the NFHS disks may have been able to confirm John's parentage from the marriage details. I'm pretty sure he was born in Sawley and s/o John TURNER boatman and Catherine nee SMEDLEY and was hoping to confirm this from the PR marriage entry.

The NFHS marriage disc usually only goes to 1900. Plus the only details are date place and bride and grooms names. They do not cover register office marriages.

Thank you rosie99 and Larkspur for the info about the NFHS disks and the possibility of a Registry Office marriage.

A question please rosie99, what is the clue in the page number of the registration that indicates it was possibly a Registry Office ceremony?

Rosie probably used the marriage locator website - you can enter volume/page number and find out which church the marriage took place in (or if in registry office)

On this occasion I did not use the marriage locator but looked at freebmd.
I searched marriages for Basford RD qtr 4 1903 with no names entered, looking at the page numbers of the results which ranged from the mid 200's to around 445.  That marriage was on page 444, apparently registry office marriages are normally listed on the higher page numbers
