'The case is altered' public house Algarkirk Boston
« on: Friday 07 February 20 10:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi all
I have found 4 generations of my family (Hanks) that where associated with above pub in Algarkirk Boston between 1872 and 1913. My question is would anywhere/anyone have a picture of this place with its unusual name as I don't believe it is still standing. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

That is an unusual name.

There is a "Case is Altered" on the list of Lost Pubs in Boston Lincs that says it was at 15 Tattershall Road.  Closed 1964.

Publican in 1896 Emma Wells.

Sadly demolished but no photo found.

I have seen it suggested that the pub with the same name at Eastcote is explained as a debased form of the Spanish Casa de Salta.

There is an article in Lincolnshire Life May 1967 (Vol. 7, No. 3) (on LincstothePast) with an anecdote about how the pub was named after a confused local farmer mistook animals straying onto his land as his own. It also gives a little history of the pub.

According to "The Dictionary of Pub Names", "Case is Altered" as a pub name is claimed to have various derivations, including "Casa de Saltar" (a phrase totally meaningless in Spanish) but demonstrates that in trying to explain a pub name, most people prefer to stay in the bar and invent something rather than pursue the matter properly, however the reason for its use is a matter of local legend in each case.

Also The Case is Altered is an early comedy by Ben Jonson. First published in 1609. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Case_is_Altered
