The village of "Karrasch" West Prussia 1870
« on: Saturday 08 February 20 01:51 GMT (UK) »
Does anyone know where I can find historical information about this village or the lake/wetlands "Karrasch-see"?
I'm familiar with the Meyers Gazetteer and Kartenmeister listings. I really want to find out how the village got it's name and anything else that might be interesting.

Welcome to rootschat, Barrabrui.

Perhaps you should ask a moderator to move this to the Europe boards where people with more knowledge of Prussia may be able to help.

My first thought would be to use a 'Prussian' equivalent of rootschat.  How is your Polish?

Added:
as you just want historical information about the village name, then a historical society, not necessarily a genealogical one.

Thanks for your help. Whilst reading Polish is out for me I do have a friend who can so I will ask him for assistance. Appreciate your other comments. The village of "Karrasch" is actually part of my genealogical search as it's my family name and my relatives who came to Australia in the 1870's must have had a connection to it once. I just can't find for the moment how or why the place got it's name.Cheers.

Hi

This is the link for Karrasch from the west prussian research group in Germany.
http://www.westpreussen.de/cms/ct/ortsverzeichnis/details.php?ID=2944

If you scroll down the page to the Literatur part you will see a link to a document from Hans Plehn
covering the History of the area.

You´ll need a DJVU viewer for this.

I did 3 screen shots of the Karrasch entry.

Bild2 and Bild3

2 Feuerstellen.  Karaś gehört zum Forstgutsbezirk Wilhelmsburg
----------------------------------------------
Karrasch was a new settlement set up according to a decree of the reigning monarch.
In the Lustration from 1738 the new colonie is called Wytryszcze, where
the farmer Jakob Karaś lived.
In the Church Visitation from 1756 the place is called Wytreść;
Later the place was called Karaś
In 1798 K(araś) hat 2 houses with fireplaces/hearths
Karaś belonged to the manor forestry area, under the lord of the manor in Wilhelmsburg

maybe somebody has a better definition for „Forstgutsbezirk“

I think it is quite possible that the place was named after Jakob Karaś

18 Mg. Kulm. = Kulmischer Morgen
