I think we have to wait for the OP to come back to us before we do any further "sleuthing".  :)

Hi thank you for taking time to reply, My Grandfather James Holdens married a,Catherine Anderson in 1934, my Grandads father on the marriage cert was Briggs Holden and his mothers name Ann their  children was James( my grandad) Sarah Alice and Margaret and may have had another child and at one point lived at Derby st Bolton. When we tried to find more out about Briggs Holden ( my great grandad) one of the leads led to a Peggy and Briggs Holden from Darwin  which may tie in with what Mabel Bagshawe came up with but when we looked for Briggs he comes up as a grandson which was illegitimate.and was wondering if he was the son of Ellen Briggs. Very confusing and very difficult as all my grandparents died before I was born and my parents died when I was younger so unfortunately no one to ask. we also think Briggs father was also called Briggs born 1800. Thank you and sorry for any confusion

The children’ s birth registration show mother as Rowe

Marriage 1881
Briggs Holden and Ann Rowe St Thomas Pendleton.
January 1st 1881

1881 3820/41/6

Shows him b Over Darwen abt 1847

I wonder if he lied about his age and was born 1841.
There is a Briggs b 1841 until 1871, then there is Briggs b 1847.

The one born 1841 is in censuses 1841 and 1851 with Titus and Peggy Holden - 1851 as grandchild.

The birth certificate would give you his mother’s name.

As said earlier, there is a family at 1841 537/6/7

Titus Holding 44 yrs
Peggy Holding 39 yrs
Mary Holding 19 yrs
James Holding 16 yrs
Alice Holding 14 yrs
George Holding 12 yrs
Peggy Holding 5 yrs
Briggs Holding 6 months

If these are the only children to Titus and Peggy, then Mary looks to be the mother of a Briggs.  There is a marriage later that year for Mary, father Titus, to Benjamin Cocker.
