Rees family - Glamorgan
« on: Sunday 09 February 20 20:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi all I am trying to find out some information regarding my great great grandmother called Margaretta Rees, I am struggling to find her parents- she was born in peterstone, Glamorgan approx 1866/7. On the 1871 census this tells me she was living with the Evans family and relationship to the head states WARD! Assuming this could be a guardianship of some kind. Any help with her parent would be wonderful. Thank you  x

Welcome to Rootschat!  ;D

Do you have Margaretta's marriage certificate to confirm her father's name & occupation?

Have you tried tracing the Evans family? Eliza aged 46 in 1871 has Peterstone as her place of birth as well. Census ref is RG10/5381 folio 17 pg 25 for others wanting to help.

This could be her birth registration

Margaretta Rees dec qtr 1866 Cardiff vol 11a pg 259 no mother's maiden name given which suggests an illegitimate birth.

Hi Sian, welcome to Rootschat  :)

FindMyPast have transcribed the relationship to head as WARD, Ancestry transcribe it as CO HARD.
Looking at the original image I'm really not sure what it says  ???

Here's a snip of the census page, maybe someone can work it out.

Robbins - Wolverhampton.
Spooner - Monmouthshire & Wolverhampton.
Warner & Loundes - Dudley/West Bromwich.
Dod(g)son - Heysham/Liverpool/Wolverhampton

I had seen cohard but no idea what it meant either, 1881 census states visitor so no hints on that one.

think the enumerator started to write something, crossed it out and then wrote Ward. I think the family she's living with is William Evans who married Elizabeth Jones
15 April 1848 at St Brides Super Ely
William Evans full age bach labourer St Brides Super Ely father John labourer
Elizabeth Jones full age spinster Llwyngibbon, Llantrisant parish father Samuel farmer
witnesses Ann Jones & John Evans.
Son Samuel was baptised at St Brides Super Ely 17 July 1848.
Family are in Pentyrch in 1861 RG9/4042 folio 28 pg 2 and there are suitable birth regs for children Mary, Elizabeth and William with mmn Jones.

I think you could be right Osprey. Looking at the way the enumerator forms the letter W, he is a bit lazy with the up stroke at the end of the W, it seems to trail off horizontally.
