HOWE/HOWES in Horsham and local area 1700-1840's
« on: Monday 10 February 20 20:54 GMT (UK) »
Researching specifically Matthew HOWE b circa 1740-1750 d 2 Aug 1806, and his family with wife Elizabeth WELLER married 23 Apr 1772.
Children
Elizabeth bapt 19 Mar 1773 - believed to have married Jesse BOYCE in Cowfold 1798
Ann bapt 25 Jun 1775 - believed to have married Richard SKINNER 12 Nov 1796 in Chipstead.
Matthew bapt 26 Dec 1777 - married Harriet WELLS 23 Sept 1805 in Horsham.
Mary bapt 27 Dec 1779 - possible marriage 1805 to Henry VOWLES in  Horsham, but this is only a 50/50 possibility as there is another Mary HOWES the same age that has family name links.
Adrea bapt 17 Mar 1782 - married William CHEAL 30 June 1803 in Fletching
Fanny bapt 16 May 1784.
Sarah bapt 16 July 1786 - probably married Thomas Sandford in Horsham 2 Feb 1807
Matthews wife died in 1798 and Matthew re-married to Winifred WORSFOLD a widow in Horsham 1799.
Matthew HOWE appears in the records of Will extracts associated with death duties.in 1806.
The record mentions his wife, his so  Matthew, 3 daughters, but no names, suggests they are married, because it mentions Sarah HOWE spinster, and also refers to two daughters of his 2nd wife, Mary ANDREW of Horsham and Adrea CHEAL of Fletching , then mention his wife and Elizabeth TOBUT of Clayton.
There are no bapt records of a Matthew HOWE/HOWES in adjacent counties  but there is another HOWES family in Horsham around this era, with a baptism of an undetermined male in 1741 to Henry HOWES and Elizabeth LUXFORD they had a further 6 children 1731 to 1748.
Matthew's declared age at his burial in 1806 is transcribed as 50, perhaps in error, or possibly accurate.
So I am interested in knowing of anyone who has connections to either family with the hope of determining a likely DNA match and paper trail link.
Also if there is a likely surviving "will" record , as far as I can determine, there does not appear to be one., only the will extract at the National Archive , referred to above IR/26/319/31 image reference 257.
My Ancestry link is through Ann, here marriage to Richard SKINNER was witnessed by a Matthew HOWE, probably her father, possibly her brother.

The Will summary is now better interpreted.
Matthews three daughters are actually mentioned by name
Mary ANDREW, (so not Mary VOWLES, there is a possible marriage in Edenbridge to be followed up.)
Adrea CHEAL.
Sarah HOWE spinster.
Matthews 2nd wife's daughters are
Winifred WELLER and Elizabeth TOBUTT.
No mention is made of Matthews other daughters
Elizabeth BOYCE- believed to be alive in 1806.
Ann SKINNER living in Carshalton.
Fanny HOWE - if she is alive.
No mention of Winifreds son John?
