Baptism of Ann Halbert c1718
« on: Monday 10 February 20 22:17 GMT (UK) »
I have the marriage of Hugh Davenport to Ann Halbert or Hallbert which took place 6 October 1746 at Manchester cathedral. Using the baptisms of their children, I worked out that they moved around a little during their marriage, first living in Northenden, then Altrincham (baptising their children in Bowdon) and then settling in Ashton upon Mersey by 1765.

Ann died in January 1784 in Ashton although she was buried in Bowdon. The parish register gave her age as 65 so she was probably born 1718/1719-ish. The only trouble is I canít seem to find her baptism anywhere. Iíve tried all sorts of variants of Halbert but nothingís turned up at all. Hopefully a fresh pair of eyes might do the trick?

Thank you

There is a distinct lack of Halbert in Lancashire/Cheshire, and I wondered if they were non-conformist or came from Scotland. Plenty of Hulberts in Wiltshire.  These might help (despite the barely legible parish register!)

Bowdon Cheshire Baptisms, s/o of Joseph Hulburt of 'Baguley'
Samuel 24/12/1712
Thomas 29/9/1717
Philip
Jenkins: Guilden Sutton/Plemonstall, Manley, Bebington: Cheshire. Wales, Hawarden Fl
Hughes/Jenkins pre-1650 north Wales., possibly Anglesey/ or Huyish of Somerset.
Smith: Somerset, North Curry area.
Dawson: Birkenhead, Lancashire, and USA.
Lawton: Birkenhead, Wirral, Staffordshire.
Jones: Flintshire, Flint
Lea/Newnes: Chirk Mill, Penley, Hanmer, Worthenbury
Williams: Llanbeblig/Caernarvon.
Rowland: Llandrygarn, Anglesey.
Brew/Lewney: Isle of Man
Powell/Bennett/Forward/Coram: Somerset/Wellingto

There might be some clues here:

Samuel Hulburt of Alderley married Hannah Layton, at Macclesfield, 5/3/1738
Samuel Hulburt burial, Bowden 29/8/1800. Age 88

Thomas Hulburt burial, Bowden, 19/10/1798

There's a Chester baptism for Margaret Halbert, 9/9/1716, d/o Joseph. No further details.

Philip
Jenkins: Guilden Sutton/Plemonstall, Manley, Bebington: Cheshire. Wales, Hawarden Fl
Hughes/Jenkins pre-1650 north Wales., possibly Anglesey/ or Huyish of Somerset.
Smith: Somerset, North Curry area.
Dawson: Birkenhead, Lancashire, and USA.
Lawton: Birkenhead, Wirral, Staffordshire.
Jones: Flintshire, Flint
Lea/Newnes: Chirk Mill, Penley, Hanmer, Worthenbury
Williams: Llanbeblig/Caernarvon.
Rowland: Llandrygarn, Anglesey.
Brew/Lewney: Isle of Man
Powell/Bennett/Forward/Coram: Somerset/Wellingto

Yes, it's definitely an elusive family  ;D There is a baptism for "Anne Hurlburt" which took place at Bowdon in 1723, daughter of Edward. Perhaps this is too late to my Ann?

Looking at Hugh Davenport, who Ann married 6/10/1746:
Possible Bowdon Bp, 15/4/1722, s/o James of Altrincham
Possible Bowdon burial, 10/3/1788, of Ashton upon Mersey.

Your Anne Hurlburt, Bp Bowden 3/4/1723, d/o Edward, husbandman
Anne Davenport, buried 6/1/1784 Bowden, wife of Hugh Davenport of Ashton upon Mersey.
So far so good, I've checked the original document and not just the (sometimes 'iffy' transcriptions). 1746 is an age appropriate marriage date.

BUT: Look at this:
Anne Halbert, Bowdon burial 11/8/1758 d/o Edward & Anne of Baguley  !!!

I guess we could be looking at two Anne Halberts, possibly cousins. Edward appears twice as father.
Joseph appears as the father of Samuel (1712), Thomas (1717) & Margaret (1716). Baguley is mentioned in Samuel's baptism and the 1758 Anne burial.
Anne/Hugh's children might help, to see if there's an Edward or Joseph named.

Looks like two, somehow related, families. What do you think?
Philip

John 1747-47
James 1748-52
Ann 1751
James 1753
Elizabeth 1755
Hugh 1760
Jane 1762

We have a Hugh & James, but no Edward/Joseph. That's my theory out of the window !
Jenkins: Guilden Sutton/Plemonstall, Manley, Bebington: Cheshire. Wales, Hawarden Fl
Hughes/Jenkins pre-1650 north Wales., possibly Anglesey/ or Huyish of Somerset.

Thank you for your research into the various Halbert families, Twydr. Itís definitely confusing and itís going to take me a while to work out but itís promising that there seems to be some Halbert families in the area.
