Parents of John Havard, Brecon area
« on: Monday 10 February 20 22:32 GMT (UK) »
Hi, hoping someone may be able to trace the parents of John Havard born 1887.

He died 18/12/1959 age 72 in Llanfrynach, Brecon.
He was married aged 23 on 07/12/1910 in Brecon Registrar Office, his father is shown on the Marriage certificate as John Havard.
1911 Census shows his age as 23,birth place shown as Merthyr Cynog, living with his wife Emily in Llanfrynach.
1939 shows his date of birth as 02/05/1887.

I originally thought his birth was registered in Builth in 1886 11b page 91, parents John and Margaret (Nee Williams) but 1911 census shows they had 9 children and only 7 were still alive. I have found a burial for a John Havard age 21, buried 25/09/07 aged 21 in St Marys, Crickadarn, and Helena Maud Havard aged 4, so believe these could be the two deceased children.

I believe his birth should have been registered in Brecknock but have been unable to find any record in 1886/1888.
I would be grateful for any tips as I have hit a brick wall. Many thanks

John and Margaret's son is firmly b Crickadarn on censuses.

Given the chap on 1911 is living in Llanigon, in the Hay area, I wonder if this is him on 1891 in Hay?

Thomas Havard    48 - b LLanigon
Mary Havard    44 - b Cusop Herefrodshire
John Havard    6 - b Cusop Herefrodshire
Minnie J Havard    1 - b Hereford

Birth still not obvious!

RG12; Piece: 4580; Folio: 43; Page: 3;

Where Merthyr CYnog comes into the picture, I don't know!

Born illegitimate and so registered under mmn, then subsequently parents married?  (or married someone else)

There is only one Havard family Merthyr Cynog, in 1891: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:4T6X-W2M

There is a John Powell, nephew, with them.

A stretch I know, but could he have been raised by them and taken their surname?

He’s not with them in 1901: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X9B1-K86

He’s here - 1901: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:X9B1-K8C

He’s not there in 1911.

John Harvard in 1891 was John Harvard who married Mary Powell Jun.1877 Brecknock so the nephew clearly from her family.

There is only one John Powell birth reg'd Brecknock in 1887 - in the June quarter (which would tie in with a birthdate of 2/5/1887) and GRO index shows he was illegitimate.

Think Jamjar has 'cracked it' but only by purchasing John Powell's birth certificate can you see if the birthdate is the same as that of your John Harvard.

I suppose it's even possible that John Harvard senior had a 'dalliance' with a sister of his wife Mary and young John Powell was the result.  Could have grown up knowing John Harvard was his real father and once he reached adulthood changed his name from Powell to Harvard.

Certainly, there is no John Powell born 1887/1888 Merthyr Cynog after 1901 - so was this because he'd become John Harvard??    I think it very likely.

Thank you all for your help, you have confirmed my suspicions. I think I will need to obtain a copy of a birth certificate to be certain.
