George 1828-1896 and Joseph Williams
« on: Tuesday 11 February 20 15:37 GMT (UK) »
Help required. my GG Grandfather George Williams died min 1896 in Blaenafon. Monmouthshire. All the census reports show that he originally came from Clodock, Herefordshire. The information i have gleaned is that on the 6th Dec 1851 he married Mary Ann Powell, at Clodock Church, Herefordshire. George's parents were Jospeh and Mary Williams and Mary Ann parents were Thomas and Mary Powell the marriage details show they are from Crasswall, 5 miles Clodock. The 1841 census shows that  Thomas, Mary and Mary Ann were living at Crasswall. George was baptised on 10th Feb 1828 at Clodock and his sister Harriot was baptised on 28th April 1830, (after this I can find no trace of Harriot Williams). Georges parents Joseph and Mary must have been very religious as the Baptisms were conducted in the Primitive Methodists Chapel , Clodock. I have found a Primitive Methodist chapel in Cresswall but not Clodock. I am trying to find more info on Joseph Birth marriage and Death.Ken

I'm assuming this is the family in the 1841 at Clodock?

Joseph Williams     50
Mary Williams       50
Charlotte Williams   19
Harriet Williams       10
Joseph Williams         7
Sarah Williams          3
H0107/420/14 pg5

Unfortunately there are a few possibilities for daughter Sarah:
Sarah WILLIAMS birth reg Jun qtr 1838 Hereford and Dore mmn PREECE
Sarah WILLIAMS birth reg Decqtr 1838 Hereford and Dore mmn BAGLY
Sarah WILLIAMS birth reg Jun qtr 1839 Hereford and Dore mmn HALL
(another reg Sep qtr 1839 but no mmn, so assuming this is not the Sarah above)

Did Harriet marry John Brentnal JENKINS at Clodock, 2 Feb 1850? They can be seen in subsequent censuses quite easily - her birth c1831 and place of birth Clodock/Crasswall

It is possible that Harriet has married John Bretnal Jenkins.  George Williams b 1828  son of Joseph  marries Mary Ann Powell 1851 Clodock Church. i do have a copy of the 1841 census for showing Mary Ann living in the household of Thomas and Mary Powell there is a link here also in the household is a 79 year old Mary Jenkins.
Thank very much for coming back to me  with this information. Your 1841 census shows that Joseph was still alive but after that  is there any trace of him. I861 census shows that George and Mary are living in Blaenafon, Monmouth and indicates both were from Clodock, Herefordshire .
Much obliged
Ken williams

I think this would be the family that had daughter Sarah with mmn PREECE - at Abbey Dore in 1851:

 Josiah Williams      34      Abbey Dore
Elizabeth J Williams    11
Mary Preece    Mother-In-Law    66
Mary Gunter    Lodger                 48
H0107/1978 / 487  pg3

Not much help - but at least you can rule them out. (Unless Elizabeth Jane is also a daughter in your family and Joseph is "Josiah"?  :-\ )
