Jane Ealands/Harland birth place was Gowdall Doncaster around 1826,one there with father John and mother Jane in 1841 which could help narrow down marriage.
Have you looked at the Robert Bennison in 1841 census Selby,b1821 America, I can't trace him after that census.

Thanks Annette, I think the USA steer is a red-herring. I think that the census takers have given a little poetic licence and decided that New York is in the USA.

Place of birth as America is recorded on two census records so it is unlikely to be an enumerator's error.

Have you looked at the Robert Bennison in 1841 census Selby,b1821 America, I can't trace him after that census.
Lee

He was probably older than that,  ages have been rounded down.  It looks like that Robert married Harriot Isabella MADDOX at Pontefract in 1839, father named as Loyd BENNISON, labourer.  Both of full age.

This jumped out at me;

1851 Census
Melbecks, Yorkshire
Robert Benson, 69, Head, Mar, Lead Mine Agent, born Grinton, Yorkshire
Mahala Benson, 54, Wife, Mar, born Melbecks
Lyndonia Benson, 11, Daug, born B Subject, United States**
Maria Clarckson, 21, Daug in Law
Thos Coale, 41, Nephew

Mahala is a second Wife, married 1839 as Clarkson, 1st Marriage likely 1816 as Mahalah Kearton to
John Clarkson.

Roberts 1st Marriage was likely to Mary Spenseley 19 Apr 1803 Grinton

Given his occp Robert may have been in US with 1st Wife?

Heya I also have a Benson brick wall. Wonder if any link? My g grandfather was Arnold Collen Benson born around 1862 supposedly in Hamsted Heath. But I have no birth records or any idea about who his parents were. there was a family rumor was that he was for a wealthy family but had been disinherited. He appears on the 1901 Census as living in Manchester and there are some Parish records from 1898 relating to birth of his oldest daughter Ruth but other than that I've drawn  blank. Any suggestions gratefully received

Welcome to Rootschat.

I've had a little look for Arnold but have to go out for awhile now so back later.
Others may help you in the meantime.

Have you ruled out this 1891 Census in Chorlton, Lancs/

Collin Benson 33 Head Mar Clerk in Warehouse born London
Jane P Benson 31 Wife Mar Dressmaker born Birmingham, Worcestershire

If him it may explain why he never married Edith Maud Heywood that I can see.

I cant see anything for Ruth but LancsOPC has bapts 1898/1902/1904/1906 for his children.

Trish :)
