When I began searching my wife’s maternal KYLE family from County Antrim, I discovered a hand written family tree, on the back it indicated it had been compiled in the 1940s in Antrim.

                    Headed John Kell about 1803 – 1870 & Lizzie Agnew 1810 – 1897
                                              Buckna, Co Antrim.

Their children were noted as follows.

James Kyle, George Kell, Thomas Kyle, Jennie Kell, Archie Kell, Margaret Kell, Elizabeth Kell.

I later found evidence that supported that some retained the name Kyle whilst others Kell but it did vary on some records over the years. When researching Kell the biggest problem, if I used name variations, were numerous Kelly's to discard.

Colin
Clarke, Trickett, Orton, Lawless, Norton, Detheridge, Kirby, Goodfellow, Wagstaff, Lowe, etc.

The marriage certificate for Thomas KELL / Maria JONES....what church did they marry at?

What names do you see for witnesses?   What addresses are recorded?

would the Thomas Kell you are asking after have been a bootmaker?

he married Maria Jones at St Nicholas Church in Parish of Liverpool on 18th January 1870. they are my great, great grandparents.

Thomas's father is listed as James Kell also a bootmaker.
Witnesses were Joseph and Ann Pickering.

This is where my knowledge end as I have trying to find information about James and go back from him for the last 10 years.

Valconn, I looked at the Tithe Applotment Books and there are quite a few Kell/Kells in both the North & Republic of Ireland. It many cases they appear to be of Protestant faith which means records would be found for North in PRONI(Public Records Office of Northern Ireland) (closed at moment but have a website) and in the Republic at the National Archives. The RC-Representative Church Body has a website www.ireland.anglican.org where you can see what records they hold and also some parish registers have been digitizer in an ongoing project. I could not find a James Kell/Kells in Dublin. Kim

I found them now in 1871 in Southport  :)
3874/133/13

Thomas Kell 50yrs
Maria Kell 43 yrs
Joseph A Kell 5 yrs
Emily Kell 3 yrs

So the age in 1861 and 1871 does match  :-\

The children were registered as Jones.

Thank you haywood
Thomas and Maria continued to live in Southport until their deaths, 1890 and 1898 respectfully.
it makes sense the children were registered in their mothers name as the marriage occurred some years after they were both born. i am fairly confident that Thomas was the father as the name Kell has been passed down the family to present day.
I don't know what to think about his age, 1861 says 40; 1871-50, 1881-57 and 1890 at death 61. he is getting younger and younger???
Other than 1861 census I am positive we have the right person.
