Owen Finnigan married a Miss Fitzgerald
« on: Thursday 13 February 20 23:13 GMT (UK) »
hi I am trying to trace info on my maternal ggg parents. I don't know her christian name or either date of birth. Owen and Miss Fitzgerald were Irish, possibly from Cork. They must have been born between 1820 and 1850 bcause their daughter, my gg mother Nora Finnigan, was born in Mallar Cork  1867/1868.

Welcome to rootschat, Carol.

Where did you get the surname Fitzgerald, please?

You say Nora was born in 1888, but have posted a marriage for her in 1888?

This is the only Owen Finnigan in the right age range on the Irish 1901 but he is shown as not married

http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Tyrone/Benburb/Drumay/1732817/

Have you found Nora on the 1901 census to establish where and when she was born?

Modified, they are on the 1911 but I cannot find them on Familysearch to give the allowed link!

Nora's marriage was 1st Aug. 1888, not her birth. She was "full age" on marriage certificate, therefore over 21. If that was correct, the latest year she could have been born was 1867.
Could "Mallar" be Mallow?
If she was born in Ireland after 1864 her birth should have been registered and her mother's Christian name and maiden forename should have been recorded. Birth, marriage and death registrations https://www.irishgenealogy.ie/en  Nora may have been short for Hanora or Honora. No Finnegan births registered in Mallow district before 1870s.
Nora's abode at the time of her marriage was Spike Island. Was her father connected to the army or navy?
P.S. Owen might also have been known as Eugene.

I was also under the impression Owen was Eoin = a form of John.
In which case the birth seems a possible since Nora gives her name as Nora Ellen later

SR District/Reg Area - Macroom
Someone with local knowledge might be able to decipher those place names

Parents John FINNIGAN and Honora formerly WALSH

Yes.
I mentioned Eugene because I noticed a Finnegan father as Owen on some birth registrations and Eugene on another.
A list of variants of Irish male names has recently been added to Ireland Reaching Out website. There's a new thread this week about it on RootsChat .
