The buttons are the General Service badge (lots on a net search) which may rule out ARP which had ARP buttons.  Can't positively ID the cap though.

It is with great difficulty I share with you that in the early hours of 07 August 2021, Maximilian passed away unexpectedly but peacefully.

With deep sadness,

This one is odd, I have recently requested his service record, that may help, would this cap have only been supplied to Army regiments?

RAF had exclusively RAF blue, RN didn't have this type of head gear so yes, army (although the ARP were civil defence and whether any other like organisations wore one I don't know.)

What is odd is the lack of cap badge.

I am aware you didn't need to know the subject's regiment when you applied for his records but did you know it by chance and perhaps his army number?

Hi MaxD,

The family believed it belonged to William Knapp (great uncle) but he was RAF (went down on BD233 over Holy Island), his number was 1375619 and he was an observer.  However I am being told perhaps the cap was that used by the Royal Army Pay Corps but alas nothing on the internet I have found so far.

The yellow is too yellow.  RAPC was more grey looking.  I've asked a forum member known to be a whizz at uniform matters to have a look.

It’s a field service cap of the [Royal -post 1920] Army Pay Corps and with GS buttons worn by other ranks.  The Norfolk Regiment had a similar cap, but the yellow piping only extended along the front half of the cap.  The yellow shade for both was quite bright.

I knew Frogsmile would have the right answer!  Always happy to be set right by someone who knows what he is talking about.

(My RAPC acquaintances back in the day clearly should have taken their caps to the dry cleaners to restore the yellow!)
