Driffield Birth
« on: Saturday 15 February 20 21:46 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

Apologises if this isn't the correct forum to post, but I have just received my great grandfathers birth certificate, I knew there wouldn't be a father (could have died pre birth - or More than likely was illegitmate) but, I have never seen a birth certificate where a woman's occupation is placed in where her maiden name should be?

Doesn't anyone know of this type of work around Driffield around 1922? or has anyone else had the same issues here? I think the writing says "Florence Maud Miranda Duffill - A Glass Cutter"

Not that unusual.  Have seen domestic servant plus others .  The fact that mother was surname  Duffill without any other surname is a clear indication that Desmond was illegitimate

Her birth is on freebmd www.freebmd.org.uk
September qtr 1902

Florence Maud M Duffill. Driffield 9d 363 mmn Savage

You will find her on the 1911 census but if you use Ancestry she is wrongly shown as Duffield

Here’s the entry on FS

thank you Carol, was I right to assume that she was a glass cutter?, interesting about my grandfather being illegitimate as, there was further siblings after Desmond also taking the Duffill name (another mystery)

Florence never married and died as Duffill in Bridlington 1990.  Born 31.5.1902

She can be found on the 1939 register (lookups are not allowed so cannot post info)  There are 2 children visible and one entry still redacted
