Clarence L Hummer
« on: Sunday 16 February 20 15:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi.
I have a Clarence L Hummer born born 1911 New Jersey, USA, died Aug 1983, Pennsylvania. He married Florence Rodgers nee Fehr after she was widowed in 1969. This is evident from her obituary in 1990. However I have drawn a blank on finding the marriage?

Within the extended family I have notice of marriage license for Clarence L Hummer to Pauline Smith in 1942, in Allentown, Easton. Again I can't find the marriage? Pauline S Hummer died 1967, I can find her burial in Pennsylvania, but not her death?

Now it seems to me that looking at this, there are two possibilities:-

1) Was Clarence a spinster when he married Florence at the age of 58 plus?

2) Was Clarence that married Florence circa 1969 a widow & previously married to Pauline Smith who would of died in 1967? Clarence who married Pauline, didn't have children with her?

Any help much appreciated.

Is this reference to his military service in June 1942, if so he is apparently single then

newspapers.com is free until tomorrow night.

Clarence's obit, 7 Aug 1983, mentions stepchildren*, but no children.

* maybe living? I haven't done the math.

Easton Marriage Licenses

Could the obits for his brother or sister help ?

Not that it helps you but the Hummer parents seem to be buried in the same cemetery.  Edith 1929 - John 1936 and a brother John C Hummer in 1980

In 1940, he was living in Phillipsburg, NJ

1940 census: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:K4YF-1MF

It appears he got a marriage license in Dec. 1942. Pauline was from Allentown, PA

========

It appears Pauline was born in England/Ireland. Her father was John J. Smith who died in 1962. Pauline is mentioned in his obit as "Mrs. Pauline Hummer of Riegelsville".  Riegelsville, PA is just a few miles south of Phillipsburg, NJ & Easton, PA. They all sit on the two states border.

Edit Added- Forgot to add the 1930 census with Pauline & her family.

Pauline's sister Alma died in 1999. The only surviving sibling listed was Evelyn Wunderley.

Pauline's brother Joseph died in 1983. Surviving sibling listed in his obit were a brother John and 2 sisters, Evelyn Wunderley & Alma Kucherera

It appears Pauline must have died between 1962 & 1983. It also appears all the children were born in Ireland, not England as 1930 census seems to suggest.

Hi.
Thank you all for your replies. Not sure I am replying correctly? Would like to reply individually though not privately to each one if some one can advice how? Wading through the info.

Could Clarence of been single at time of enlistment in 1942, then marriage license applied for Dec 1942? This would fit.

Pauline died 1967 (query suicide, would that be in a newspaper any where?), that would mean if it is one and same Clarence L he was then free to remarry Florence circa 1969.

Obits for rest of family very helpful, I am working through the info. If only we could locate the two marriages of Clarence L, it might give dob on them?

This could be Pauline's death
Name:    Pauline Hummer
Death Date:    Sep 1967
Death Place:    Phillipsburg, Warren, New Jersey, USA

There was another woman of that name living in Phillipsburg, age 2, in 1940. But she married H.R. in May 1954, then survived her father Paul whose obituary is in the 29 Aug 1978 Allentown Morning Call. In his obit she is called Mrs Pauline R.

Again, I haven't done the research to see if the other Pauline and her husband are living, which is why I just put the inititals here.

At any rate, that could be your Pauline's death.

P.S. your method of replying is fine. :)
