Ann Chater
« on: Sunday 16 February 20 19:58 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to to find the surname of my 3 x great grandmother's mother Elizabeth.
Ann was baptised 3/4/1991 in Wallsend, Northumberland. Her father is listed as William Chater and her mother as Elizabeth.
I have found a marriage transcription for a William Chater and Elizabeth Moore  dated 12/5/1788 in Christchurch, Tynemouth.  There are many baptisms shown for the children of  a William Chater in the same location. Some give the mother as Elizabeth Moore, some as Elizabeth Murray, and some as just Elizabeth.
I cannot find a record for a marriage for William Chater and Elizabeth Murray.
Is anyone able to help or give suggestions
Many thanks

Margaret

Typo - don't think you mean baptised 1991 if parents married 1788.  Do you mean 1791?

I don't know how accurate this is (and often I find submitted trees on familysearch not accurate!) but just for interest there is this tree which has Ann as the child of William CHATER and Elisabeth MOOR

Thank you for your reply. I have checked them out. Ann's baptism only gives her mother's name as Elizabeth. The other family members have either Elizabeth Murray, Elizabeth Moor or just Elizabeth as their mother.
I have no information at all on Elizabeth Murray.
Thanks anyway
Margaret

Have you seen the image of the record or are Moore and Murray both taken from transcriptions?

I have looked at a few Chater families around Tyneside as I am trying to knock down a brick wall at my 5th great grandmother Susannah Chator who married Caleb Nesbitt in Newcastle in 1742. They lived in Longbenton so it is possible our Chater and Chator lines may connect somewhere behind your William.

I have checked for records on the Durham Diocese bishops transcripts.

There are images for:

Robert Chater bap 1796 whose mother is named as Elizabeth. There is death for a  6 year old Robert Chater in 1801 whose mother is named as Elizabeth Moor

Abraham Chater bap 1798 whose mother is named as Elizabeth Murray

John Chater bap 1806 whose mother is named as Elizabeth Moore

Elizabeth and Edward Chater bap 1815 whose mother is named Elizabeth

Otherwise I have relied on transcripts
Thanks
Margaret

It may be worth taking a look at the original parish records. The Bishops Transcripts are a copy so an error could have crept in during the copying process.
