Genetic relationships assistance please.*COMPLETED*
« on: Tuesday 18 February 20 05:26 GMT (UK) »
Having difficulty getting my head around the following in order to determine the relationship between two individuals.

Henry John SCOWCROFT & Mary Musgrave BOWEN married.

Henry John SCOWCROFT was the son of William SCOWCROFT & Anne JONES.

William SCOWCROFT was the son of Thomas SCOWCROFT & Elizabeth JONES.

Mary Musgrave BOWEN was the daughter of Peregrine BOWEN & Eliza SCOWCROFT.

Eliza SCOWCROFT was the daughter of Thomas SCOWCROFT & Elizabeth JONES

As can be seen Eliza SCOWCROFT & William SCOWCROFT are brother and sister.

Is it correct to infer Henry John SCOWCROFT & Mary Musgrave BOWEN are first cousins?

You are correct. Because Henry John Scowcroft and Mary Musgrave Bowen share a pair of grandparents, they are first cousins.

Out of curiosity, do you know if Henry John Scowcroft's mother and paternal grandmother (the Jonses) are also related?

I always find it easier to view relationships diagrammatically. I generally draw up a basic rough tree on a piece of paper, making sure the generations align, then see how they fit in a table like this:

That is so true.  A quick sketch is vital.  A picture paints a thousand words.

I regularly draw quick trees, usually from my gr gr grandfather, to check relationships. In my case they are usually once or twice removed, as I come from a line of younger children.

As yet I haven't followed the JONES to determine a relationship although if there is one I wont be surprised.   ;D

I think when I asked the question I had been at the research too long and needed a break.  Nonetheless thank you for your input.
