Help please with Maggie DAY born 1883 Baulking, Berkshire
« on: Tuesday 18 February 20 19:12 GMT (UK) »
My elusive Maggie DAY....! This might, a big might, be my Grandmother Maggie Day who abandoned my Father and his two elder sisters in Bedford, Bedfordshire in1918 and was never heard of again. I have proven DNA ancestors from Baulking, Berkshire and have found this Maggie there in 1891 and 1901 censuses, but I am having great difficulty tracking her down in the 1911 UK Census. Her birth was registered as Maggie and she is named Maggie in both censuses, but on my Father's birth certificate she is Margaret. She may have married although she states maiden name DAY on birth certificate. She called herself Maggie BRADFORD on poor law records in Bedford although no marriage has been found. Any help greatly appreciated....

The year was your father born? Do you have an occupation for Maggie and an address that might help locate her?

Edit
are the poor records in Bedford for Maggie Bradford year 1918?

We can't really do 1911 look ups, but there is the free index on FamilySearch to consult.

A possibility?

Not found anything for 1911

No ages given on record or marital status - could she have emigrated?

Two records leaving UK for Canada in 1919 both  persons named Maggie Bradford

Yes, ties in with this death reg.
Dec 1925 Brentford 3a 174
Sewell, Margaret Lilian
age 43

And the Sewell birth registrations in Brentford with mother's maiden name Day continue on after 1911.
If this is the Maggie Day in question then she is not Margaret Bradford.

Thank you all for your efforts...

Here is a copy of a very old post of mine showing the brickwalls I have on both my Paternal Grandparents -

My father John William BRADFORD was born in Bedford in 1916. He had two older sisters, Evelyn May BRADFORD (b1914) and Florence Cecelia BRADFORD (b1915) both also born in Bedford. Evelyn was born in Bedford Union Workhouse.

I have copies of birth certificates for them all with John Bradford being shown as the father.

There are really two mysteries -

1) Whilst on Evelyn's birth certificate (The eldest child) and my fathers birth certificate (The youngest child) The mother Margaret states her maiden name as GREEN, however on Florence's birth certificate (The middle child) she gives her maiden name as DAY. To date I have found no marriage for BRADFORD - GREEN or BRADFORD - DAY.

2) In 1918 all the children are sent to the Lodge childrens home in Kempston, Beds. (The entry book for the date they arrive states "Deserted by mother") They never have any further contact with their parents and no-one knows what becomes of them.

I only have 3 official records of John BRADFORD the father.

He appears on all three birth certificates (As horse keeper, Carman, and Waggoner)

He appears on the 1913 electoral roll for Bedford together with his wife Margaret residing in Bell Court, St. John's, Bedford.

He appears on the Bedford Union Relief records on 26th September 1916 as being given two shilling and sixpence. On this record he gives his age as 60. On a similar record in 1914 when Margaret is discharged from the workhouse with her new born child Evelyn, Margaret (Shown as Maggie) gives her age as 35. (Quite an age gap for a married couple?) The discharge record states 'Discharged to husband'

After 1916 I can find no record of either of them. I do have a few death records with these names in later years but no way of connecting them to my family.

It is a mystery I have been trying to solve for many years. My father recently died and was still tormented as to why he and his sisters were 'given away'.

Unfortunately all three children were born after the 1911 census, and I cannot find a John Bradford together with a Margaret/Maggie either Day/Green/Bradford together anywhere. Looks like I will have to wait for the 1921 census and try and find them there.

I know what happened to the 3 children (One of them my father) and I'm happy to report that after such a bad start they all went on to live happy and rewarding lives.....
