Mauritius 1843
« on: Thursday 20 February 20 04:45 GMT (UK) »
I am looking for information regarding my great grandfather Frederick Joseph Savage who we are told was born in Port Louis, Mauritius in 1843. He came to Australia in about 1857. His father was William Savage and we know that he was in the Regiment of Militia of Riflemen for the County Sligo in 1855. We also believe that William died at Sligo in 1870. I would appreciate any ideas as to how we can confirm this information and add to it.

What else do you know about him ? Siblings names names of children  and wife
Last address Religion ?

If you have ancestry full membership it might be worth looking to see if his father was a freemasons

I've just found a record for Irish Freemason but in Mauritius .can give clues to years family lived there

Welcome to Rootschat, Liz.

There are armed forces birth records for:

Army Returns: Frederic Joseph Savage 1840-43 Mauritius page 800
Army Regimental births and baptisms: 1843: Frederic Joseph Savage, 12th Regiment vol 955 page 51

You can apply to the GRO for an overseas birth certificate.

Regimental Sgt Major William Savage, 12th Foot number 289, was in Mauritius in the early 1840's. It's  shown in his army record as "Isle of France".

Thank you all.  :)
As I am a complete novice in this area, I have some learning to do as to how to access information from the findmypast link and information from the GRO but am sure I will get there!
I have very little other information regarding him or his family. His g/grandson was a Freemason in Australia. I know little about Freemasons however this maybe a good clue!
