Find a particular street on a census?
« on: Thursday 20 February 20 22:14 GMT (UK) »
Is there a way to view an entire street on the census returns? I'm trying to find all the residents of Palace Road, Upper Norwood, London on the 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891 census returns but I can't find a way of searching for a particular street nor can I work out which district etc Palace Road would have been in to locate manually.

Using Ancestry, and for 1861 census:

Click on Search and then Census & Electoral Rolls.
From the panel on the right, select 1861 Census Collection.
Scroll down, and select 1861 England Census.

Enter "Upper Norwood" in the "Lived In" box.
Enter "Palace Road" in the Keyword box - you'll need the speech marks ;D

Then you should get a list.

The National Archives produced street indexes for mainly larger registration districts in the days before censuses were widely available online. They aren't being revised or added to any more, but the ones that do exist have been archived at

Researching among others:

Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Another way to do it is to look for someone who lived there. For instance the Norwood News has an ad in March 1880 from W Peskett, grocer, 1 Palace Road, Upper Norwood. In the 1881 census that comes under Penge.

William Peskett in 1881:
