Baptisms of Robert Fisher abt 1748 and Ann Foulkes of Handbridge
« on: Friday 21 February 20 17:30 GMT (UK) »
Looking to determine the correct baptism for Robert Fisher and Ann Foulkes, who were married in St Mary's on the Hill (Handbridge) in 1775. Both are described as of the parish but I can't seem to find a birth for either of them in the parish in the relevant time period.

Robert Fisher died in Chester on the 16th December 1829, aged 81 which places his birth year at around 1848. Ann died in 1801 but burial record doesn't specify her age.

There are a few Ann Foulkes born in other parishes not far away but seeing as both are stated as of the parish its odd not to find at least one of them born there.

Of the parish when mentioned on a marriage entry means that they were living there in the period up to the wedding and is not necessarily where they were born

I do understand that, but from my experience usually at least one of the spouses is from the area, emphasis on usually...

regardless, I can't find a Robert Fisher anywhere in Cheshire circa 1748.

Are you using online records.  Have you tried scrolling through the registers or just searched with surname or first name and approx date.  Some Chester records around that time are partly illegible.

Yeah, I've noticed that. Might be the case with Robert Fisher. Interesting that his surname was Fisher and he was a fisherman, perhaps Fisher was simply an alias. I don't imagine there were laws about name standardisation in those days.

I was just looking at a totally unrelated register in Surrey where a record for a Fisher burial had been transcribed as Eisher,  it had been written in 'joined up' writing so it did look like Eisher

There are not laws about what you can call yourself now in the UK, as long as it is not for fraudulent use you can call yourself what you like.

thanks for this. It seems that a Thomas Fisher and Margaret Clement are listed as marrying on the same record!
