Finding the History of a House
« on: Saturday 22 February 20 20:40 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I live in a house that's called Brook House most probably built around 1860
There is a Brook that actually runs under the house!

Address has always been Brook House (as far as I know) Lowes Hill Hammersmith Ripley Derbyshire

Hammersmith was a small village built by the Butterley company and I know Brook House was built as part of this village

I've tried to use FindmyPast but cannot find any info relating to my house

Would some kind person please give me some pointers on where to look in the census from 1841 to 1911 and the 1939 Register as it would be good to know who has lived at Brook House over the years

Regards
Peter

The name of the house may not be recorded in the censuses, or may be incorrectly recorded.

Are there other houses near yours with distinctive names?

Have you found Lowes Hill in  all the censuses?

Hi

There are other houses on Lowes Hill but they are not close enough to Brook House

I think the problem with searching for the house is the Hammersmith Hamlet built by Butterley Engineering Company

Have you checked the enumerator's route at the front of each census to see which way the houses were recorded?

Just found I made a suggestion in 2014

We cannot look up 1939 for you, but it does have an occupant showing then, and names of property that may be either side of it.

These newspaper clips may help with a 1939 Register search, the name ROBERTS appears in both articles.
Robbins - Wolverhampton.
Spooner - Monmouthshire & Wolverhampton.
Warner & Loundes - Dudley/West Bromwich.
Dod(g)son - Heysham/Liverpool/Wolverhampton

The house in question is on the map
It's in a plot of land just below the H of Hammersmith tucked away in the corner

What date is this map thanks

THe Hampsons are living in Lowes Hill in 1901. no house number, just before Hammersmith.

Similarly in 1891, just before a Hammersmith section.

Map was revised 1898.
