Adam Dalgleish, Patervan 1882
« on: Saturday 22 February 20 20:59 GMT (UK) »
Dear friends, I am not sure whether this is the right forum for my question but I don't have any other idea or possibility.
The reason of my inquiry is the following:
a couple of weeks ago I bought via internet in England a painting ( I live in Germany).
At the backside some notes are to be found: Patervan 1st August 1882, to Mr. Adam Dalgleish from the artist J.M. Cullock (unfortunately the name is not sure, maybe J.M. Culloch. The J also could be an I ...). At the internet I have found a photo of nowadays which looks very similar to the painting https://www.geograph.org.uk/photo/2217742). Does anybody know where I cab find some information about Patervan in 1882 or around that date? Also whether there are information to the people who lived there, especially to Adam Dalgleish. Any help is welcome.
Thank you very much.

Adam Dalgleish and Margaret Grieve married on 25 Oct 1861 in Ettrick, Selkirkshire www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XYQ1-5XB

Jumping to the 1901 census, I think this is Adam and wife Margaret:

Adam Dalgliesh 65 Retired Shepherd b. Ettrick Selkirkshire
Margt Dalgliesh 58 b. Ettrick Selkirkshire
Jessie G Dalgliesh 33 daughter b. b. Ettrick Selkirkshire

Some auction sites do show him as J M Culloch such as here www.sworder.co.uk/prices-realised/?a=144

Always a possibility that J M Culloch was actually J M'Culloch (Mc or Mac).

I am wondering if this John McCulloch could be him. In 1881:

John McCulloch 50 artist b. Ayr Ayrshire
Mary McCulloch 22 wife
Mary A McCulloch 3
George McCulloch 1

Address 19 Dorset Street Glasgow/Kelvin

And in 1891:

John McCulloch 60 Artist (Portrait Painting) b. Ayr
Mary Forster McCulloch 51 (age seems erratic! She is aged 42 - a widow? - in 1901)
Margaret McCulloch 13
George McCulloch 11
John McCulloch 9
Mary Jane McCulloch 7
Thomas McCulloch 5
Edgar McCulloch 4
Elizabeth McCulloch 1

Address 60 Tobago St, Glasgow/Calton

I can't easily see this John Culloch's death so far on the Scottish indexes on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk...but I have been searching for Culloch rather than M*Culloch. Added: John McCulloch's death from above shows in 1891 in the Calton area of Glasgow.

Some sources to consider:

https://sculpture.gla.ac.uk/view/person.php?id=msib6_1223041395

www.trcallan.com/pdfs/CatalogueMay2012.pdf - Lot 321 by artist J McCulloch. Does the style of painting seem familiar to your painting?

Late 1800's map of Patervan area

Where it has a pull-down menu that says ESRI world ...click down to change it to the 1900 overlay (can't send it in that mode)

People helped me immeasurably here with my family and I just want to give back a bit. I got Adam Dalgleish's marriage cert to Margaret Grieves Oct 25 1861

1863 marriage of Adam and Margaret
https://drive.google.com/open?id=1ACfLJetZRr-9iI3rv2N-jZB1wXhHUdnU

It lists Margaret Grieves parents as:  William Grieve - Shepard and Janet Grieve nee:/ Dalgleish

For Adam Dalgleish's parents it only lists mother as Margaret Dalgleish. domestic servant

No father listed but I found the attached that is from very close in the area

I believe these to be the parents of Adam Dalgleish because Tweedsmuir is just down the road from Patervan and Stanhope.

DALGLEISH ADAM

parents:
WALTER DALGLEISH/ANN STODART FR468 (FR468)
M
13/12/1843
772/30 24
Tweedsmuir

If you need help finding the cert on ScotlandPeoples site let me know. It will cost a dollar or so to see it.
