Thomas Smith's wife Annie
« on: Sunday 23 February 20 11:43 GMT (UK) »
Thomas Smith was born in Alton, Staffs, in 1865, and he was still there, unmarried, in 1891.  But his daughter Margaret Annie was born in Llandudno in 1899 and on the 1901 census he is a restaurant owner there (Chesterfield House, Trinity St) with his wife Annie.  They are still there in 1911.  Annie is said to have been born in Portmadoc in 1865.  Now, the only possible marriage I can find is in Mar q 1898 in Conway, and Annie could be Evans or Roberts.  I don't want to buy another certificate - I've bought 4 already for this tree  >:( - so can anyone please help with this?  Who was Annie?

Ah good, thanks.  I have tried searching for Annie Evans but found no one who fits.  It's always possible that it was her second marriage, I know.

The marriage probably took place in Llandudno, but all births, marriages & deaths at that time in the area would have been registered in Conway.

Thanks, folks.  I'm waiting for the marriage certificate.  It seems a long wait.

Update - I now have the marriage certificate of Thomas Smith and Annie Evans.  Annie was living in Llandudno at the time of her marriage in 1898 and on both subsequent censuses she gives her birthplace as Portmadoc.  Her father, she says, is Humphrey Evans, mariner, deceased.  One of the witnesses is Elizabeth Jane Evans, and I've worked out that this was Annie's sister.  Their mother, Elizabeth, appears to have married Benjamin Jones after Humphrey's death.  I've got the family in a couple of censuses.  Elizabeth was born c. 1842 in Llandudno, but both daughters were born in Portmadoc.  The task now is to find Elizabeth and Humphrey as a married couple - no luck so far.

Depends which census you read. 1871 says Elizabeth the mother and Anne b Ynyscynhaiarn (v nr Porthmadog)  and Eliza Jane b LLanbeblig. 1891 says mother b Carnarvon
