James Sumner born 1817 Bishop Stortford
« on: Monday 24 February 20 02:23 GMT (UK) »
I would love to hear some more about my Great, Great Grandfather. James Sumner born in 1817 in Bishop Stortford particularly who his parents were. In the 1841 Census he is married to Ann and they have a daughter Mary Ann. He later marries Elizabeth Tucker. There are two other older couples on this census from memory in their 50s late 40s who could be his parents, James and Charlotte and I think it was Robert and Elizabeth. James was 25 in 1841 and a clerk. His youngest son is my Great Grandfather James Tucker Sumner who I have caught up with on the 1881 census he and his brother George are living and working in London. Most of the family seems to disappear from Bishop Stortford in the 1880s.

I think in 1841 Elizabeth Ive was living with James Tucker and Wife Elizabeth in Bishops Stortford which might be where the middle name of James Tucker Sumner came from :-\

James Tucker - 35 Baker
Elizabeth Sarah Tucker 35
Elizabeth Ive 15  - Not born in county

You have given me my next generation back. So much information. Thank you so much for this. I did have two contenders as James parents from the 1841 census. Now I know. The name James in my Sumner family went on through all future generations into the late seventies when James Sumner of my era had two daughters. So James Sumner of Pinner London (now retired living in Bournemouth area) was the last James Sumner.  My Grandfather Charles William Sumner, James Tucker Sumners son came to NZ in 1924 with my Father and his sister. They had been living in the West Ham, Lewisham area. :-)

There are a few mentions of James SUMNER in newspapers - in trouble for selling beer during the hours of divine service in June 1860; being robbed of some dried herrings in February 1864.

Also a concert in London given in honour of James SUMNER jnr formerly of Bishop Stortford in Febraury 1893.

Happy to copy the articles if you haven't seen them.
