Date please - man with pony & trap
« on: Monday 24 February 20 12:24 GMT (UK) »
I would appreciate an opinion, please, on the date of this cabinet card by Allan Ramsden.
He was an itinerant photographer, but was based in Hexham in the 1880's and I wonder if this photograph was taken during this time?
He clearly wasn't happy with the man's eyes as they have obviously been re-touched (he mentions doing this on more than one occasion in his book 'Life in a Caravan').

(Please note, I do have full biographical details on this particular photographer).

It looks to be 1890s but the card stock is earlier, late 1870s early 80s...not too sure about this Jen, I think you need to wait for Jim who has a better idea of men's clothing styles than me.

Fashion for fastening the top button on a jacket supposedly comes from Edward VII who had a bit of a gut on him!  ;D

Thank you both  :)
I have several other CdV’s and Cabinet Cards on this exact card stock, and they have all been dated to late 1870’s - mid 1880’s. And I do know that he was based in Hexham for several years mid 1880’s.

Yes Jen...I know that card stock was earlier but the outfit with the small peaked cap threw me..I think the top button fastening most likely suggests mid-late 1870s.
Another nice image and cartes with animals are highly collectable  :D Did you get your dating book Jen?
