berwickshire roots
« on: Monday 24 February 20 16:37 GMT (UK) »
I come seeking help in tracing the parents of my greatgreatggg grandfathers. The first is Peter Lillie born on the Little Thank Plantation in Eccles, he became the blacksmith in Gavinton and married Margaret Simpson in Coldingham in 1782.
My maternal gggggrandfather Gideon Pitilla was born in  Melrose in 1808 but I also find a Gideon Pitilla also born in Melrose in 1799. Surely that couldn't be brothers!
Please help if you can.

Using ScotlandsPeople  I did a search 1780 to 1810 for Gideon Pitilla , which showed one only,  with a date 26th May 1799 at Melrose. Parents Archibald Pitilla and Janet Wright.

They could be if the one born in 1799 died and they named a later child after the deceased elder brother.

It`s listed as Pitilla on SP, but I didn`t look at the original.

Hello Peter and a warm welcome to Rootschat.  I don't know if you are interested, but I have some additional information about Gideon's wife, Dorothy Smeaton, b 11 May 1811 in Newcastle, NBL, a daughter of Thomas Smeaton of Gateshead, Co. Durham and Dorothy Soulsby who were married in St Nicholas Cathedral, Newcastle on 16 June 1806.  Also, on one of their daughters, Dorothy Nelson Pattilla, chr 14 July 1835 in Newcastle.
